The stunning coastline on the Great Ocean Road around the Otway Coast Hamlets is unforgettable. Mount Defiance through to Petticoat Creek has many stops for the traveller to take in the awe-inspiring scenery. Stop for a photo or stay longer to explore the coastal trails and secluded beaches, stake out a sunrise or spot yachts, cruise ships and even whales traversing Bass Strait.
Located about 5km east of Kennett River and just west of Grey River, The cape dominates views from nearby coastal towns and the lookout is 80 metres above sea level - giving sweeping panoramic views. A busy car park on a sweeping bend. Take care or come for sunrise to have it to yourself (pictured).
MOUNT DEFIANCE LOOKOUT
On a tricky section of road sweeping around Mount Defiance (imagine how tricky it was to make this road without modern day equipment) one of the prettiest views toward Lorne is captured from this spot. There's only room for a few cars to stop here at a time.
5kms north-west of Wye River (toward Lorne). At low tide wreckage from this ship, including the capstan winch, anchor and, at very low tide, the iron frame are clearly visible straight out to sea from the grave site. There is a plaque and tomb at the site. For more information – drop in to the Lorne and Apollo Bay Historical Societies
East from Jamieson's River you will find Artillery Rocks. The steps down take you to some dynamic rock formations. A very popular fishing spot - if they are biting it may be difficult to park.
A favourite for locals. A fairly generous car park gives access to the beach here, near the Boggaley Creek bridge just west of Separation Creek. The sandy beach is large but we recommend swimming only in the rock pools (turn left on the beach from the car park). At low tide the rock pools are still and some are quite deep. A great spot to bring young kids to learn to paddle or snorkel.
GREY RIVER ROAD
Just a kilometre or so up Grey River road from Kennett River's Koala Cafe you will find a spot to pull out and set your eyes upon this stunning view! For your hero shot of the Great Ocean Road, this view point is our little secret. Okay?
There is limited parking at many of these pull outs. Remember the Great Ocean Road is busy - if the car park is full save the stop for your return journey. Do not block the road.
